Sulfamethoxazole is an antibiotic derived from Sulfa, which works to inhibit the activity and proliferation of germ cells by inhibiting the manufacture of specific enzymes that germs need for their growth and activity, while trimethoprim works to prevent the formation of folic acid, which stops the growth and reproduction of bacteria, as it works to increase the strength of the effect Sulfamethoxazole on different germs.


When is trimethoprim prescribed?

Bactrim affects a wide range of germs such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, streptococcus, Haemophilus influenza, and Shigella, so it is used in the following cases:


Urinary tract infections:

Such as nephritis, pyelitis, acute and chronic cystitis, urethritis, gonorrhea, and prostatitis.


Inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract:

  • Such as traveler's diarrhea, and enteritis caused by Escherichia coli and Shigella, typhoid, and paratyphoid.
  • Acute otitis media.
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis in adults.


As well as in some other respiratory infections:

Such as sinusitis, pharyngitis, pneumocystis carinii, and toxoplasmosis.


What is trimethoprim used for

Bactrim is available in pharmacies as tablets (80 mg trimethoprim + 400 mg sulfamethoxazole), double-strength tablets (160 mg + 800 mg) and syrup (40 mg + 200 mg / 5 ml). The liquid form of the drug should be shaken well before a dose is given.


It is given in an adult dose of 1600 mg/day for sulfamethoxazole, and for children under 12 years at a dose of 40 mg/kg/day for sulfamethoxazole. Treatment should last for five days in the case of diarrhea and 14 days in other cases.


Effectiveness starts within 1-4 hours and lasts 12 hours, so the daily dose is divided into two meals.


How to give the trimethoprim Poultry

The medicine is taken on an empty stomach, but it can be taken with food or milk in case the stomach discomfort occurs when it is taken alone, and it is possible to grind the tablets and put them in water or any food easy to swallow in case they are not able to swallow them, and you must drink a lot of liquids after eating Medication, especially when the weather is hot.



Bactrim may cause a group of rare side effects, the most common of which are: gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite), and allergic reactions to the skin (rash). Skin reactions usually begin during the first period of using the treatment and must be stopped at the first Rash, as these reactions may develop into life-threatening situations.


Pregnant women can be given the drug in the first trimester, as it is considered safe, and it is not recommended to give it to pregnant women in the last months (it is classified in category C).


It is also not recommended for breastfeeding women during the two months following childbirth, or for children less than two months old.


It is contraindicated if there is a deficiency in the enzyme G6PD (foal) to avoid the risk of hemolysis, as well as for patients with megaloblastic anemia (resulting from a deficiency of vitamin B12 or vitamin B9 known as folic acid).


It is contraindicated in patients with severe renal insufficiency or liver damage, and the dose given should be reduced in cases of mild renal impairment.
